Miami-Dade’s sheriff and school superintendent put out a warning for drivers on Friday: School bus stop arm cameras are back.
Nearly 900 school busses have cameras installed to capture drivers who don’t stop when buses are picking up or dropping off students.
The camera program was previously put on hold a little over a year ago after drivers raised concerns, including some being ticketed in situations not requiring them to stop.
But on May 14, the cameras will be active again and issuing warnings for a 14-day period before they start issuing tickets again.
“There will be more monitoring to ensure that we are consistent with the process. That’s a critical piece here,” Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Jose Dotres said. “We are all at the table, and want to make sure that that’s like the sheriff said, we owe it to our community, clarity, consistency ― and that’s why we call it a relaunch.”
Officials said the relaunch is about changing driver behavior.
