Bogdan Daraban is among the experts who believe in the power of education to deal with fraudsters who exploit easy-to-use artificial intelligence apps.
Daraban is the vice-provost of Barry University’s Technology Innovation and Education. He is passionate about integrating AI into education.
Daraban learned about the catfisher who used AI-generated videos to impersonate a Miami Beach real estate broker to deceive a United Kingdom victim.
“Unfortunately nefarious uses of this technology will continue to proliferate. It is a powerful technology,” Daraban said.
Barry University is launching the new AI Center to help students access training on AI-powered tools and the implications of ethical responsibility.
“It all starts with awareness and education,” Daraban said.
The Miami Beach case is an example of the need to develop systems to protect the public from scammers’ nefarious use of AI tech. Miami Beach police officers have been unable to identify the catfisher.
“It is very important for us to understand at a fundamental level how this technology operates and what it is capable of doing,” Daraban said.
