Miami’s balanced attack has the Hurricanes in control against Notre Dame, 21-7, at the end of the third quarter of their Sunday night showdown at Hard Rock Stadium.
Freshman quarterback CJ Carr has shown flashes for the Fighting Irish, completing 12 of 20 passes for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns.
On the other side, Georgia transfer Carson Beck has led the Hurricanes efficiently, going 18 of 25 for 189 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions through three quarters.
The first half’s highlight came from Miami receiver Isaiah Daniels, who reached out along the sideline for a spectacular one-handed catch, drawing a roar from the crowd and setting the tone for the Hurricanes’ passing attack.
Miami, which won the toss and deferred, received the ball to start the second half and leaned on running back Mark Fletcher Jr. for several carries in a ground-and-pound approach.
Wide receiver Toney added a key first-down reception to keep the drive alive, and running back Marty Brown powered in a touchdown to cap a 12-play, 75-yard march. The drive chewed up 7 minutes, 37 seconds and put Miami ahead 21-7 with 7:23 left in the third quarter.
Notre Dame responded immediately. Carr scrambled up the middle for 20 yards, then found Malachi Fields on a deep pass, with Fields leaping over cornerback OJ Federique to haul in the catch.
The Irish were pushed back by a holding penalty on tight end Eli Raridon to the Miami 24-yard line, but a defensive pass interference call gave them a fresh set of downs.
Carr added a 6-yard quarterback draw to set up first-and-goal, and an unnecessary roughness penalty on Miami advanced the ball to the 1-yard line as the third quarter ended.
Costly penalties for Miami helped Carr find Faison for a one-yard score. Miami leads ND 21-14 with 14:55 left in the 4th.
